Welcome to Jenny’s world of Professional Editing, Proofreading and Publishing!

Jenny has been working in publishing for over 15 years and has a wealth of knowledge when it comes to working with words, design and the print production process.

After completing a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communication at the University of Newcastle, she started working in Sydney for a marketing company as an account coordinator; writing, editing and proofreading travel brochures, flyers, in-house magazines and other printed marketing material. This is when she discovered her talent for thorough, accurate proofreading and began to learn about design, typography and printing.

From there, she moved to Lansdowne Publishing, a packager of non-fiction, illustrated books. As well as editing and proofreading she project managed books, liaised with authors and freelancers, commissioned photography and illustrations, wrote promotional and back cover copy, and submitted ideas for the publishing program. It was at Lansdowne that she started desktop publishing in Quark Xpress and learnt Photoshop and Illustrator.

A move to Woodslane Press, Australian publisher for the For Dummies series, meant a trip to the United States for intensive training in structural and copyediting, and she had the privilege of receiving one-on-one online training with highly skilled editors in the US on her return.

When her first child was born in 2000, Jenny started freelancing—at first proofreading and consulting for the For Dummies books. She also took up a position as editing and proofreading tutor for a private college.

Her freelance career began in earnest after her second child had turned two and she has done editing and proofreading for a wide range of clients including New Holland Publishers, John Wiley & Sons Australia, Wrightbooks, McGraw-Hill and Big Sky Publishing, as well as for individual authors.

While she has mainly worked in book publishing Jenny has also worked on an online newsletter; edited material for the Web, catalogues and exhibition labels for an art gallery; and proofread and typeset manuals in InDesign for a design studio.

Jenny holds a range of qualifications including Accredited Editor with the Institute of Professional Editors.

She is passionate about passing on her skills and sharing the experience and knowledge she has gained over the years with students.

“Freelance editing isn’t for everyone,” Jenny says. “But it has been the perfect career for raising my family and I get to do what I love: read – all day.”
