Welcome to Kim’s colourful world of photography! Kim Welinski is the owner and principal photographer of asterisk photography (spelt in lower case), a Sydney based photography studio specialising in wedding, portrait and commercial photography. Kim originally studied at the University of Technology, Sydney where he obtained a Bachelor of Business degree (with Distinction). He then spent the next fourteen years working in the financial markets. However, the financial sector was not where Kim wanted to be; his secret dream was to be a photographer. Although he had been interested in photography from a very young age, it took Kim a while before he realised his technical knowledge and understanding of photography didn’t match his innate ability and overwhelming desire to be a professional photographer. Determined to bridge the gap, he decided to study under master photographers such as Murray Fredericks and Gordon Undy at Point Light Gallery, and Bob Kersey at Black Mountain Photographic Workshops. He especially focused on the exquisite craft of black and white film photography, and the fine art of silver gelatin darkroom printing. The 2000 Sydney Olympics renewed this determination to photograph in a photo-journalistic style and a number of events the following year became the catalyst for him to make a new start in business. With young children of his own, Kim learnt first-hand how to take portrait photographs of children in a very candid and natural style. Yet it has always been the spontaneous nature of a wedding that has inspired him the most. Now, the studio takes on commercial assignments with a definite bias towards people photography. Not surprisingly, capturing people when they’re completely unaware of the camera is by far the most exciting.
In 2008, after several years honing his skills, Kim managed to win five awards at the NSW AIPP Professional Photography Awards. His combined portfolio in the commercial section scored him the accolade of AIPP NSW Runner-up Commercial Photographer of the Year.
Kim not only runs his own studio but also takes time out to teach photography to both amateurs and budding professionals alike.
