Welcome to Vicky's world of editing, proofreading and publishing!

Victoria Fisher (Vicky) has worked in publishing for over 20 years in Australia and the UK, and she now manages her own editing and proofreading business. Vicky started the business in early 2007 and has built up an enviable client list, with such notable companies as Pan-Macmillan, Murdoch Books, Penguin Books, the Australasian Society for HIV Medicine, Aurum Press and the Lowy Institute.

Vicky originally began her publishing career as Editorial Secretary in the Books Department of Orbis Publishing in London—helping with back cover copy, compiling bibliographies and library research. Her last position in the UK was as Managing Editor of Which? Books, the book publishing arm of a national consumer organisation.
With her wealth of experience covering trade publishing, weekly magazines, not-for-profit organisations and an academic research institute, Vicky is now a highly sought after editor in the industry. She has worked predominantly in non-fiction, editing subject matter as diverse as wine, skiing, practical gardening, gardening history, cookery, health, personal finance, biography, medicine, corporate governance and defence. What an interesting and rewarding way to make a living.

Yes, I have worked with lots of different subject matter,” Vicky says. “Everything from how to make your own wedding dress to weapons of mass destruction! It might sound challenging—and it is—but it’s also incredibly fascinating work. It’s a great career to have and working freelance gives me the flexibility to pursue other passions.”

Vicky has a BA Hons degree in French and Italian. She was a member of Women in Publishing (WiP) in the UK and is now a member of the Society of Editors (NSW).
She is passionate about the purpose and worth of good editing and proofreading, believing that both can bring clarity and accessibility to any text. She believes that with the plethora of typos now popping up in public spaces, the emerging opportunities for editors and proofreaders are expanding.

I really want to instill in students the qualities of the professional editor and proofreader,” Vicky says. “It isn’t just about spelling errors—although I’m known to be ruthless with typos—editing and proofreading is so much more than that. Learning about author relationships, how to mark up without offending the client and being professional; these are just some of the other qualities I like to pass on to students.”

With Vicky’s feedback support and guidance, we know you will find your course a rewarding, stimulating and positive experience—and one that may just change your life!
